01_A House in a Mill on a Hill
Today only the foundation remains of what was once a grand mill. The ruins are located on a hill that was probably designated as the windiest place in the parish. But the location also provides a wide view, especially over the plain towards the sea in the southeast.
The project consists of designing and constructing a lightweight structure within the ruins. The private client wants to use the house as a creative studio and vacation home. The aim is to bring the old ruins to life and add a layer from our time to the site's long history.
The concrete foundation of the mill can be reused, but we cannot count on any support from the tattered foundation wall. Therefore, the house is planned as a lightweight timber structure completely detached from the wall, which allows it to be constructed off site and then transported and lifted into place.
