MALMÖ BOSTADSBRIGAD

EN

We are the Malmö Bostadsbrigad and we want to build new co-housing in Malmö.

In recent years how we live, work and socialise has been challenged and changed. Society is threatened by climate collapse and economic inequality. The Malmö Bostadsbrigad has no radical goals. We simply want to stop destroying the planet and ensure the UN Charter on Human Rights is respected.

It is possible to live so that we stop emitting greenhouse gases and build so that we store carbon dioxide in the houses. We believe that the view of housing as an object of speculation is incompatible with Article 25 of the UN Declaration on Human Rights, where housing is a right. The price increases on housing have pulled society apart and caused many to be excluded from large parts of the housing market.

Finally, we want a happier, safer, less lonely and more forward-looking society where we face challenges together!

The process

The process from idea to finished house will be long and winding. That is why Malmö Architecture Cooperative has started the process and will continue to be a driving party in it - we already know a lot about collective housing, organization and the construction process! Simplified, the process will look like this:

Sustainability

Sustainability is a key part of the project. We work actively to reduce our climate impact by investing in energy efficiency, solar energy and recycling and re-use of materials. We believe that our collective house will be an example of how shared living can be part of the solution to environmental challenges.

  • Run a campaign, arouse interest, meet and discuss! How should the collective housing be organized and function? Features, community, look at examples and other people's experiences.

Find a property that can be converted, a plot that can be built on and/or a partnership with a real estate company that can help.

Investigate, discuss and plan the accommodation with everyone involved.

Formal construction process (building permit, design, construction)

    Move in and party!

The most important thing in this process is to find the right people to collaborate with. A collective house is nothing without its members. We have opened up for interested people who share our values and visions to become part of our project. Finding the right members is crucial to creating a community that stands on the podium all the way through to occupancy.

Financing

In the start-up of a construction brigade, in addition to people, some capital is also needed. Right now, a process is underway with various banks and investors who might consider participating. The brigade will of course put in a lot of capital in the form of work, which reduces the need for money, but it is likely that the members of the brigade will also have to contribute with an effort for starting capital and for the project to stand on a stable financial basis.

  • The project will work with all aspects of sustainability.

Housing in our society is fragmented, we live close to each other but are alone, and natural everyday meeting points are largely missing. We see accommodation as a place where you not only rest from work and school but where your life goes on. Every day is important and everyday life must be valued. One way is, for example, to enable intergenerational housing.

It is also economically rational to live more collectively. Not only does it enable efficient use of space, but it also makes sharing easier. Research also shows that the administration becomes more financially sustainable when democratic processes are slow and irrational quick decisions are expanded.

  • A way forward could also be for the brigade's members to contribute an effort as start-up capital to ensure that the project stands on a stable financial basis. However, it excludes financially weak people from joining.

A great potential in being many is the large network of contacts it creates. Contacts will certainly be decisive in how the brigade is organized financially.
