10_ Half a Recycled Home

Half a recycled home is an ongoing project extending an early 20th-century summer cottage in Malmö. The clients are (like us) deeply committed to building sustainability and have together with us worked hard to find reused materials for windows, doors, foundation and kitchen. All new materials are also carbon sinks, from timber studs to cellulose isolation and wooden finishes.

The cottage was built in the 1920s using simple means. Some of the walls and roof were made with leftover timber, a sustainable practice that needs to be adopted again. Renovated in the 90s using plastic paint and other not suitable modern materials, the cabin was in a poor state. The original feeling was preserved though, and this renovation and extension is going to fully restore it to its former cute glory!

It was pointless to draw conventional construction details for this small and unconventional project largely being built by the owner and family themselves. Instead, we approached it much like an instruction manual that one may receive from a flat pack furniture company.

Step by step, simplified and easy to follow instructions made the construction go fast and smooth.
